Parent Meeting Recap
We'd just like to thank everyone for the tremendous turn-out this past Thursday at our 2010/2011 school year kick-off meeting. We had nearly all current families represented, as well as a number of former MCMS parents not currently enrolled with us.
For those that were unable to attend, we've listed some brief highlights below, including several good questions that former MCMS parents asked at the end.
Here's the highlights from Thursday's meeting:
Tim Seldin, from the Montessori Foundation joined us live via web conference.
He addressed questions about the importance of the three-year cycle, when is the best time to make the transition to public school, etc. Though we don't have a tape of his address, we are attempting to secure video covering these topics to provide in the future.
CCM is Financially Strong and Healthy
We are proud to say that CCM will end this year well 'in the black.' As a board, one of our strongest commitments when starting CCM was to be conservative with our finances. We have established a reserve fund to insure against any future unexpected expenses, and have already dedicated additional funds in hand to expand our curriculum for next year.
We Have Additional Windowed Class Space to Grow
The River of Life Church has been very pleased with our lease arrangement, and very impressed with our program, staff and children. They have offered additional dedicated classroom space with natural light for next year. We're also securing additional play-yard space for recess.
The Addition of a Music Program for 2010/2011
Though there are still some details to be ironed out, we plan to offer a supplemental music program. Students will study music theory and learn to read music. Various instruments will be offered as well as piano. Look for more details in the future.
Additional Science Studies
We have set aside funds to purchase additional science materials, and are considering other options to augment our science curriculum.
Enrollment Packs and Tuition, and Discounts for 2010/2011
In deference to the local economy, we have committed to holding our rates without increase for 2010/2011. We have however, standardized and simplified our rate schedules, and as such you may see a change of a few dollars plus or minus. We are also continuing to offer a 3% discount for early registration (April 1, 2010) as well as a 3% discount for full pre-payment. Please also note the simplification of the multi-child discount. See the enrollment pack for details, available from Sue in the office or by emailing a request to info@kidscornerstone.org.
Needs-based Scholarships for New Students
Due in part to some generous donations, we have set aside a limited number of $1,000 dollar scholarships for new students. Scholarships will be distributed on a needs basis. Look for more details in the future.
School Board Nominations, Volunteers and Election
We are soliciting both nominations and volunteers for the new school board. If you have any interest, please don't be shy and let us know. Members will serve two-year rolling terms. The board meets one-evening per month. The board will consist of 9 members. Two current staff members, four members with students at the school, and three members from outside of CCM.
Candidates are asked to submit by March 5th a 1 paragraph statement as to who they are and why they should be on the board. They may send it into the school with their child or E-mail it into the school web site. E-mail is the preferred method.
Ballots will be distributed out via E-mail and a hard copy will be sent home with students by March 12th. Ballots will be due back by March 19th. Results will be finalized at the March 25th Advisory Commitee meeting and elected members will be notified on March 26th. Transitioning to the new board will begin in April with the new Board taking control in July of 2010.
CCM Wins Big at City Science Fair
Despite our relatively small number of students, CCM was a big success at the city science fair. Clark Devore received best of K-2nd grade and a gold medal!
Josh Whitehead and Carlitos Jimenez were both silver medalists! Congratulations to all participants. See the photos below. Way to represent CCM!

Winter Gear
With winter upon us, we would like to remind all parents to send in appropriate recess gear. Winter boots, hats, gloves and warm jackets are expected for the children to be able to play outside. Please also make sure that EVERYTHING is clearly marked with your child’s name. We have a limited area for our gear and would like to stay as organized as possible. Keep in mind, if the wind chill is 20 degrees or above, we will go outside. Thanks everyone!
Christmas Program
A huge thanks to all those who helped make our Christmas program a success! Also, thanks to those who helped give to the Goodwill Offering. We raised almost $200! If you’d like to order the Christmas slide show don’t forget to turn in your order form to the office by this Friday!
Lost & Found
We found a pair of gold framed glasses with a blue cord and a silver pendant necklace in the Café after the Christmas program. If these belong to anyone, please see Sue in the office. Thanks!
